My Fellow Americans: A Political Comedy That Hit The Bullseye

One of my favorite scenes in this film occurs when former President Matt Douglas (James Garner) interrupts his old foe President Kramer’s (Jack Lemmon) speech on live television. He makes his way onto stage to address crowds with his own speech which quickly turns into an impromptu crowd surfing stunt. The scene is funny not just because of its physicality but also because it highlights just how unconventional these characters can be at times.
The acting talents showcased in this film is beyond compare. Jack Lemmon brings so much authenticity to his role as President Kramer, that it’s easy to forget you’re watching an actor. James Garner’s portrayal of President Douglas is equally impressive. The chemistry between the two veterans is unmatched and their performances complement each other beautifully.
Lauren Bacall, who appears as Margaret Kramer, adds a touch of glamour to the cast. Her character might not have as much screen time compared to the former Presidents, but Bacall’s presence elevates every scene she’s in.
