Oh fair readers, lend me your ears! For I have a tale of deceit, betrayal and redemption to share with you. Nay, it is not a tale from the pages of William Shakespeare but rather a movie that bears his spirit. This movie is called “Level 16” and it is unlike anything that you have seen before.
In the city of Vestalis, there exists an institution called the Vestalis Academy. It is a place for young girls to learn how to become proper ladies and contribute to society. The girls are kept in a strict regimen with no access to the outside world. They are taught to be obedient and follow orders without question. It is believed that they are being trained for their own good, but all is not what it seems.
The story follows two friends, Vivien (Katie Douglas) and Sophia (Celina Martin), who have been in the academy for years. They have followed every rule laid out for them but as they grow older, they begin to question why they are there. They uncover a sinister truth about their past which puts everything they have ever known into question.
The plot of “Level 16” is truly gripping and keeps the audience on their toes throughout its runtime of one hour and forty-three minutes. The story has been crafted with precision by director Danishka Esterhazy who also wrote the screenplay. It has shades of “The Handmaid’s Tale” by Margaret Atwood mixed with a dash of Orwellian dystopia.
The cast of “Level 16” brings their A-game in terms of acting performances. Katie Douglas shines as Vivien, her portrayal shows both vulnerability as well as strength which makes her character compelling to watch on screen. Celina Martin also delivers a great performance as Sophia demonstrating her range in different emotional states.
The supporting cast includes Peter Outerbridge as Dr Miro who runs the academy with an iron fist and Sara Canning playing the role of Miss Brixil, one of the academy teachers who is sympathetic to the girls. The characters in “Level 16” are well written and add depth to the story.
The movie has received critical acclaim since its release in 2019 with many praising its feminist themes and message against conformity. The film’s score composed by Menalon, adds an eerie atmosphere to the film creating a sense of dread which complements the tone.
The movie was shot in Toronto and has a bleak color palette which helps to create an oppressive feeling. The cinematography is handled by John Price who captures every scene with precision. The production design by Zosia Mackenzie also adds to the overall aesthetic of the movie.
In terms of accolades, “Level 16” won Best Canadian Feature Film at Fantasia International Film Festival in 2018 and was nominated for Best Production Design at the Canadian Screen Awards in 2019.
The dialogue is sharp and precise, with each line adding depth to the characters and moving the plot forward. There are moments of tension that will make you hold your breath as well as scenes that will make you cringe in disgust but overall it serves to create an immersive experience for viewers.
There are a few minor criticisms however, some scenes felt choppy due to poor editing choices which detracted from an otherwise excellent viewing experience. Nonetheless, it’s a small issue compared to everything else done right in this movie.
In conclusion, “Level 16” is a must-watch for anyone who loves great storytelling with strong female leads. It is without a doubt one of 2019’s best movies and deserves all its praise. To quote Shakespeare himself: “All’s well that ends well”, and this movie certainly does just that!
